Beginning Session Description (8:30am to 10:00am) –  

Planned Giving: Gifts of a Lifetime

Developing a robust planned giving program is crucial to the financial stability of any non-profit.  This session will introduce you to the concepts and practice of planned giving from a former front-line planned giving fundraiser. You will learn the fundamentals of planned giving:  what it is, how it works, how to implement strategies and how it can impact your organization and career. 

Course Objectives:

  • Solid comprehension of the most common planned giving vehicles such as bequests, charitable gift annuities, life insurance, and retirement plans
  • Understand the lifecycle of a planned gift
  • Strategies to develop organizational readiness for a planned giving program with board, staff and donors



Breakout Sessions (10:15am to 12:00pm) –  

Two breakout sessions for Intermediate and Advance level participants. Small group study and practice using sample vehicles

Breakout 1: Intermediate Breakout Objectives:  Preparing Your Nonprofit for Planned Gifts

Nonprofit readiness for planned giving; policies, marketing and donor stewardship

Ethical guidelines and standards of practice


Breakout 2: Advanced Breakout Objectives:  Steps to Create an Everlasting Legacy

Charitable Trusts

Building a pipeline of gifts by using intention forms and existing donor database

Capture the importance of a gift acceptance policy and sample gift agreement

Relationship to endowments (brief discussion of relevant Florida Statutes)




Jim Moody Bio - 

Jim Moody, Th.M. serves as Program Manager at the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership, responsible for custom training, education and consulting.  Jim works primarily with organizations in the areas of organizational effectiveness, governance, fundraising and leadership.  Jim is an accomplished professional with 8 years of C-suite experience, 6 with nonprofit organizations.  Particular expertise includes startups/turnaround success, governance, strategic planning, communications, leadership, fundraising and financial development.  He is a proven trainer, consultant and facilitator.  Jim offers documented success in fund development, including planned giving strategies for a rural health foundation, 2 disability services agencies and a manufacturing business.  He is a graduate of Cornell University’s Leadership Institute for Nonprofit Executives and also received a Certificate in Proposal Writing from the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership. 


Jim is a graduate of Northeastern Seminary with a Master’s Degree in Theology.  He completed his undergraduate work at Johnson & Wales University and Springfield College.  He received Bachelor of Science degrees in Administrative Management and Community Leadership & Development. Jim served for 6 years on a public school Board of Education and as a member of the New York Department of Education, State Rehabilitation Council. 


David Torre, J.D Bio - 

David Torre, J.D. serves as Senior Wealth Planner for SunTrust Private Wealth based in Winter Park, Florida. Prior to joining SunTrust, Torre practiced law with a boutique firm focused exclusively in the areas of estate planning, probate, trust administration, and charitable gift planning. He was admitted to The Florida Bar in 2009 and was in private practice prior to serving as Director of Gift Planning at Rollins College. While at Rollins, he was responsible for working with donors to develop charitable gift strategies with complex tax, financial, and legal implications. Torre also frequently worked with professional advisors including attorneys, accountants, family offices, corporate trustees, and private foundations on deferred and structured gifts including estate and trust gifts, fine artwork, and endowed funds. Torre graduated from Valencia College, Rollins College and the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. He is Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park and serves on the boards of the Central Florida Foundation and the Winter Park Public Library.
