The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens seeks a dynamic Director of Advancement. As part of the senior leadership team and in partnership with the Executive Director, the Director of Advancement will lead the transformation and expansion of the Museum’s fundraising efforts. S/he will serve as a key cultivator and solicitor of donors while providing leadership, strategy, and management of Museum staff and volunteers to secure resources for the Museum’s mission and vision for the future. A creative and inspirational thinker, s/he will lead a combined development and marketing team with the goal of connecting the Museum’s mission to the broader community, including current and prospective constituents. With an eye on all aspects of philanthropic support (membership, annual fund, donor cultivation and retention, corporate relations, grants, foundation support, capital giving, long-term endowment opportunities, and legacy giving), s/he will be a hands-on leader, actively engaged in aligning these efforts to broaden and deepen the Museum’s donor and audience base to fulfill ambitious contributed revenue goals. This seasoned and accomplished professional will effectively navigate a fast-paced environment of annual operating goals while contributing to the Museum’s long-term strategy and visioning work. The successful candidate will be honored to serve as an institutional ambassador, in both the North Florida communities and within the larger advancement profession, to help the Museum “engage and inspire through the arts, gardens, and education.”
About the Cummer Museum
The Cummer Museum, an AAM accredited institution in Jacksonville, FL., maintains one of the most significant collections of European and American art in the Southeast. The Museum's founders, Arthur and Ninah Cummer, assembled a private collection of 60 Old Master and 19th century American paintings, forming the nucleus of the permanent collection. In 56 years, the permanent collection has grown through purchase and donation to 5,000 objects whose dates of origin range from 2000 B.C. to the present. The strength of the collection is European (1300-1920) and American (1800-1940) paintings, but representative examples of ancient Mediterranean art, Japanese art, and 20th century American art are included in the collection. The Museum also features one of the three finest collections of early manufacture (1710-1750) Meissen porcelain in the world.
The Cummer Museum boasts one of the most important and delightful gardens in Northeast Florida. Idyllically located on the banks of the St. Johns River, the gardens have a fascinating history stretching back more than 100 years and bear the imprint of some of the foremost names in landscape design and horticulture, including Ossian Cole Simonds, Ellen Biddle Shipman, Thomas Meehan and Sons, and the fabled Olmsted firm. The involvement of these prestigious firms gives national importance to the gardens at the Museum. Throughout the year, the gardens are ablaze with rare horticultural specimens nestled under a canopy of mature live oak trees. In addition to the lush plantings, features such as reflecting pools, fountains, arbors, antique ornaments, and sculptures help create a special outdoor space that provides a perfect complement to the Museum's collections. The Cummer Gardens are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Throughout the institution’s history, the collections have served as the cornerstone in the Museum’s mission – to “engage and inspire through the arts, gardens, and education.” In accordance with the expressed wishes of its founder, Ninah May Holden Cummer, it seeks to serve as “a center of beauty and culture” for the benefit of “all of the people.” Educational programs are presented through our nationally recognized interactive learning center, Art Connections, winner of the prestigious IMLS Museum Services Award.
- Support the Museum’s mission, vision, and values by exhibiting the following behaviors: excellence and competence, collaboration, innovation, respect for the individual, commitment to our community, and accountability and ownership.
- Lead and manage the Museum‘s development plan and marketing activities to include membership, annual appeal, corporate underwriting, grants, contributions from individuals, events, and planned giving.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward annual fund, foundation, corporate and planned gifts, and existing and prospective donors in close collaboration with the Executive Director and Board members to support the Museum’s annual operating budget of 4 million.
- Maintain a personal prospect portfolio of 50 to 75 donors to cultivate, solicit, and close gifts
- Provide leadership in creating an environment that motivates team members and encourages collaboration in fulfillment of the Museum’s mission.
- Mentor Museum colleagues in best practices for a donor-centered culture of advancement.
- Manage day-to-day and strategic initiatives. Set short-term and long-term fund development goals.
- Implement institutional priorities such as growth of upper level donors, endowment fundraising, and fundraising for future capital and annual projects.
- Develop and implement communication strategies to make members, donors, sponsors, and the community feel connected to and invested in the life of the Museum.
- Ensure excellence and the highest quality in all proposals and donor interactions.
- Develop and systematize comprehensive donor and member prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship activities.
- Maintain accurate short and long-term budgeting while ensuring revenue goals and expense targets are met.
- Identify and work collaboratively with various internal departments to execute fundraising and donor cultivation events, such as exhibition openings, fundraising luncheons, and other donor related events.
- Leverage greater opportunities for donor engagement and social interaction by attending, participating in, and engaging visitors, members, and donors at Museum events and gatherings. Serve as an ambassador to the community.
- Develop proposals and lead solicitations for capital and endowment gifts.
- Facilitate effective fundraising by the Executive Director, Board, and volunteer leaders.
- Plan and oversee all major gift solicitations, working with Director, staff, and volunteers.
- Create and manage Ponce de Leon Society annual plan (top level annual donor society).
- Participate in the development and implementation of Museum’s strategic plan.
- Perform personnel management functions, including, but not limited to, employment/termination, performance management, training, supervision and administer the personnel policies and procedures.
- Serve as the liaison to Advancement committee of the Board of Trustees.
- Prioritize and manage development activities in the community; vet and delegate outreach requests.
- Manage staff to maintain Altru database as it relates to prospects, existing donors, members, granting organizations, and corporate contributions.
- Coordinate grant proposals to tax-supported and private foundations, including research, foundation relations and follow-up.
- Manage a reporting system to provide analysis of the effectiveness of the program on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Ensure that performance reports are generated and tracked for staff and Board.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- At least 7–10 years progressively responsible development experience, quantifiable results in all areas of fundraising with a focus on major gifts, previous capital campaign leadership experience, a strong record of building long-term relationships, and excellent philanthropic planning skills.
- Must have demonstrated experience in personally soliciting and closing major gifts.
- Previous experience in a museum or arts organization preferred.
- Ability to gather and synthesize information and turn it into a compelling case statement.
- Demonstrated skill in productive work with board/leadership volunteers including fundraising, development planning, board development, and training.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong ability to influence and inspire.
- Experience developing high-level strategies to achieve organizational goals while providing guidance to the advancement team on tactical approaches for success. Ability to analyze market, identify external threats and opportunities, and adapt strategy to changing conditions.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Knowledge and use of Blackbaud Altru or Raisers Edge fundraising platforms preferred.
- Ethical compliance, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- Schedule will include nights and weekends due to events.
- Must have excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done especially when important deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressures.
- Valid Florida driver license.
