Development Officer

General Summary:  Responsible for visiting, cultivating, and soliciting a minimum of 20 donor prospects a month, and/or 200 prospects a year, including individuals, foundation, and corporations for annual capital, and planned gifts.  Extensive travel is required, as much time will be spent outside the office visiting with donors and includes nights and weekends.    



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major, annual fund, and capital gift prospects.
  • Develop gift solicitation strategies, proposals, and case statements for major gift prospects, and executive those strategies.
  • Develop proposals and case statements for capital projects to include Power Point presentations.
  • Manage and coordinate prospect visits with Institutional Advancement staff, th President and volunteers.
  • Identify new prospects while actively managing a portfolio of annual, capital, and major gift prospects (200+ individuals).
  • Maintain a personal visit schedule of 20 face-to-face contacts on average per month or 200 contacts a year.
  • Assist in the advancement effort through prospect identification, cultivation, and research to solicit the best donor prospects.
  • Work closely with the Institutional Advancement Staff and Director of Development in identifying gift prospects.
  • Involve major gift prospects in events on campus.
  • Collaborate and communicate with college personnel including college relations, faculty and athletic program staff.
  • Record in Raisers Edge all contacts with prospects and donors and call reports for face-to-face visits.
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with the Institutional Advancement staff.
  • Participate in all fundraising activities of the College as well as Family Weekend, Scholarship Socials, numerous alumni events around the country, Spring Donor Recognition Dinner, and Alumni Weekend.
  • Develop a working knowledge of planned giving.
  • Participate in a mid-year performance discussion and a performance evaluation each year which will include a professional development plan.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. 





Bachelor’s degree required.  Minimum of five years’ professional work experience in development or in a non-profit organization with some emphasis in major gift fundraising, senior level fundraising, or upper-level annual fund work.  Additional special skills needed include the following:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills: articulate, conceptual and persuasive
  • Outgoing professional with experience in building relationships with prospective donors and a passion for the mission of the College
  • Proven strong interpersonal skills and good judgment suitable for exercising appropriate discretion and demeanor when dealing with Institutional Advancement staff, College employees, Board members, donors and prospects, and members of the public
  • Integrity coupled with the ability to engender trust and confidence 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in the handling of confidential information
  • Goal and task oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use current computer technology, such as Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Raiser’s Edge
  • Significant experience or proven track record of successfully raising progressively larger fundraising goals, including those achieved through face-to-face donor meetings and solicitations.
  • Proven skill in creating and implementing fundraising plans, including strategies for immediate and long-term growth.




Working Conditions


Work duties performed primarily in temperature controlled office, with frequent interaction with staff and College constituents.  Lifting occasionally up to 20 lbs.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Extensive travel required.
